Published:I must admit, being asked 'What's your major?' is one of the most nerve-racking questions thrown at college students, at least for me. The simple question leads to a whirlwind of assumptions and fears for our future careers. I recently got some clarity after writing this article on an inspiring Adelphi alum who is the epitome of someone who hasn't been pigeonholed by her major.

Published:Caio Gomes is a junior international relations major with minors in peace studies and environmental studies. He is also a Levermore Global Scholar, Adelphi's innovative academic community dedicated to preparing students to become global thinkers and leaders in a changing world. After college, Gomes plans to tackle issues regarding human rights, social and climate justice, and world peace.

It seems preordained, as the daughter of Adelphi sociology professor Melanie Bush, PhD, she was named after the title character in the musical Sarafina!, which depicts the story of a group of South African students brave enough to participate in the Soweto riots against apartheid.
