Making art with children who have been affected by conflict has been Cindy Maguire, PhD‘s life’s work. “I work in the United States and internationally with children and youth in conflict-affected communities using arts as a tool for empowerment and teaching,” said Dr. Maguire, associate professor in the Department of Communications at Adelphi University.

After a year at an out-of-state school, Matthew Spirakis is back on Long Island, majoring in business at Adelphi. But the sophomore already has some impressive business experience under his belt.

When junior Nicolette Macchio was an incoming first-year student, she received an email about the First-Year Community Action Program (FCAP). “I thought, 'Wow, that's a really cool thing!'" she said. She joined and loved it so much that she became an FCAP leader.

For the second year, the Pink Patch Project is back at Adelphi University, raising awareness and funds for those affected by breast cancer.

Thomas Kline, EdD, will join Adelphi University's Executive Leadership team as vice president of University advancement and external relations beginning November 1. As the nation approaches the 20th anniversary of September 11, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York City commemorates and honors those killed in the terrorist attacks of that day—as well as the earlier terrorist truck bomb attack that occurred on February 26, 1993—and the survivors and first responders, and recognizes the many ways in which the world came together in the aftermath.

On September 11, 2001, a 27-year-old management associate with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey went to his office on the 86th floor of One World Trade Center. When the building was hit shortly after, he led several coworkers to safety.

This past year, the Adelphi community showed its resilience and strength as we Zoomed through classes and meetings, connected with one another over FaceTime and dreamed of better days ahead.
