When Juan Jaramillo, PhD, associate professor of decision sciences and marketing, came to Adelphi in 2018, he brought with him more than just the skills and knowledge to help launch the Master of Science in Business Analytics program in the Robert B. Willumstad School of Business.

While it was another challenging year for the world, 2021 again saw Adelphi University and its community well represented in the news media—locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

After a year at an out-of-state school, Matthew Spirakis is back on Long Island, majoring in business at Adelphi. But the sophomore already has some impressive business experience under his belt.

Jacques Barber, PhD, professor and dean, and J. Christopher Muran, PhD, professor and interim dean while Dr. Barber is on sabbatical, have collaborated on a revised psychodynamic therapy chapter in Bergin and Garfield's Handbook of Psychotherapy and Behavior Change 7th Edition (Wiley 2021), considered “the bible of psychotherapy." It builds on the original chapter published in 2013, for which they also collaborated.

In March 2020, as New York entered lockdown and COVID-19 patients overwhelmed area hospitals, Lea Theodore, PhD, Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology professor and director of the Derner school psychology program, received an email out of the blue.

Career success is more probable when built from a solid foundation. Because they attend the AACSB-accredited Robert B. Willumstad School of Business, our students clearly recognize that their academic credentials and the knowledge they will accrue during their business studies constitute a robust architecture from which to construct their careers.

Ern Knox ‘75 came to Adelphi first as a commuter student from Roosevelt, and later as a resident student, to study psychology. He found a strong community in the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, the first Black fraternity on Long Island, as a member of its second pledge class. SharRon McCoy-Knox, an aspiring nurse, commuted from Freeport. SharRon was actively involved in student life and had a role in establishing the first Black sorority at Adelphi, Alpha Kappa Alpha.

In 2018, Adelphi University made history by opening the country's first sensory room at a college or university. The sensory room provides a calming refuge for students and others in the campus community who are on the autism spectrum or have other sensory special needs.

The U.S. Department of Labor indicates that the demand for translators and interpreters will grow at least 18 percent through 2026.
