Explore, innovate and make new discoveries with distinguished faculty who mentor you through scientific exploration in our chemistry degree programs.
Advance your understanding of matter and change through hands-on research, faculty mentorship and courses that prepare you for careers in science, medicine, research and teaching.
At Adelphi University’s Chemistry Department, we offer extraordinary opportunities through hands-on research, interdisciplinary collaboration and applied scientific practice. Our chemistry students engage in cutting-edge science, developing the skills to address complex global challenges.
Under the mentorship of expert faculty, you’ll gain a deep understanding of the molecular world through hands-on experimentation in our state-of-the-art labs. Whether your passion lies in developing new pharmaceuticals, creating sustainable materials, or pursuing a health profession, we provide the foundational knowledge and practical experience in chemistry to launch an extraordinary career.
Our chemistry programs are designed to help you:
- Master the core principles of chemistry through a rigorous, ACS-accredited curriculum.
- Apply classroom knowledge to real challenges through undergraduate research, often beginning in your first year.
- Build a professional edge by presenting at national conferences and networking with industry leaders.
As a chemistry major in the STEP program, I experienced both worlds of research and education. All the professors I had truly looked out for the best interest of their students—they want to see us all succeed.
Research for Undergraduate Chemistry Students
Research is at the core of your chemistry education. Our faculty pursue work across organic synthesis, biochemistry, materials science, analytical chemistry and physical chemistry, and they actively involve students in their state‑of‑the‑art laboratories from the very first year.
We hold a weekly seminar where chemistry majors develop soft skills, prepare cover letters and résumés, discuss grants, fellowships, and internships, and present research findings.
As a chemistry student researcher, you may:
- Design and synthesize new molecules for drug discovery and sustainable materials.
- Investigate reaction mechanisms using computational chemistry and advanced spectroscopy.
- Create novel biomaterials and polymers for targeted drug delivery and medical applications.
- Develop new catalysts and energy solutions to address environmental challenges.
You will have opportunities to present your work at our annual Scholarship and Creative Works Conference and at national meetings like the American Chemical Society (ACS) National Meeting, helping you build confidence, technical skills, and your professional network.
Through the SPARK Center (Scholars Pursuing Arts, Research and Knowledge), Adelphi undergraduate students can find funding and mentorship to turn innovative scientific ideas into impactful research projects.
Student Life and Hands-on Learning
By blending rigorous academics, chemistry-focused learning and real-world experiences, you will graduate career-ready and prepared to tackle the challenges of today and tomorrow.
For-Credit Internship Opportunities
Gain real-world experience while earning academic credit through our for-credit internship opportunities. Partnering with leading companies and organizations, we provide chemistry students with hands-on learning experiences that bridge the gap between classroom theory and industry practice.
International Research Experiences
Gain global perspectives through international research opportunities, such as the NSF International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) program. Current projects have included collaborations with the University of Warsaw, where students contributed to cutting-edge studies in materials science and sustainable energy, including investigations into alternative semiconductor materials.
Student Clubs and Organizations
Get involved, build connections, and grow your skills through chemistry clubs and honor societies. Collaborate with fellow students, attend hands-on workshops, participate in outreach activities, and explore career opportunities in chemistry and related STEM fields.
