Dive into the wonders of the universe through physics and engineering through the dynamic, student-focused and deeply collaborative environment in our physics degree programs.

Discover your future in engineering, quantum mechanics, astrophysics, materials science, computational physics, experimental physics and physics education.

The Department of Physics at Adelphi University emphasizes outstanding student support and exceptional research opportunities. You’ll be part of a vibrant and welcoming community of scholars, learning from professors who are advancing the frontiers of physics, photonics, astrophysics and engineering.

Research for Undergraduate Physics Students

Physics-centric research is a critical component of your Adelphi physics education. Faculty members lead research groups in areas such as quantum optics, astrophysics, atomic physics, plasma science and applied experimental physics. Students can participate in these projects in our state-of-the-art labs as early as their first year. In three dedicated project labs, students design and carry out their own experiments or engineering projects.

You’ll be encouraged to share your work through presentations at our annual Scholarship and Creative Works Conference and major physics conferences nationwide, helping you hone your scientific communication skills and expand your professional network.

Adelphi’s SPARK Center (Scholars Pursuing Arts, Research and Knowledge) supports undergraduates with project funding, research guidance, and connections to resources that help bring your ideas to life.

I presented the research I conducted during my Horace McDonell Fellowship at a conference with 1,500 people. The experience made me a much stronger applicant in the next internship cycle.

Student Life and Hands-on Learning

By combining a strong foundation in physics with hands-on research and practical applications, you’ll develop the skills to tackle complex challenges and prepare for what comes next—whether that’s graduate study in engineering or competitive PhD programs, leading to meaningful careers across engineering, education and scientific research.

Internship Opportunities

Internships, including research opportunities at institutions such as Brookhaven National Laboratory, the Cradle of Aviation Museum, and NASA, give our physics students the opportunity to work alongside scientists in a variety of settings.

Lab for Kids

Our Lab for Kids program is an exciting outreach effort that sparks curiosity and nurtures a passion for science in young learners. Backed by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Physics Teacher Education Coalition (PhysTEC), it provides hands-on physics experiments and interactive experiences that bring science to life.

Student Clubs and Organizations

Adelphi’s Physics Club, affiliated with the Society of Physics Students (SPS), offers students a platform to engage deeply with physics through research, outreach and community.

Considering Engineering? Start With Physics

At Adelphi, students interested in engineering can shape their path based on their goals—pursuing prestigious graduate programs, completing the joint-degree engineering track or launching engineering careers directly with personalized preparation, guidance and a firm base in physics.

High School Programs

High school students have the unique opportunity to collaborate directly with Adelphi physics professors, exploring the fascinating properties of quantum particles through hands-on lab activities and computer simulations. Participants can earn academic credit while gaining valuable college experience.
