Adelphi University Prize for Leadership

2009 Recipients
Adelphi University honored ten exceptional high school students from Garden City at the University's annual Prize for Leadership ceremony. The Prize for Leadership recognizes high school students who reside in Garden City for their outstanding public service and volunteer leadership. A reception was held in their honor in the Center for Recreation and Sports in the Campbell Lounge, where they each were presented with a $1,000 stipend, two University classes of their choice, and a commemorative clock.

About Adelphi University:

What is the Adelphi University Prize for Leadership?
Each year, the Adelphi University Prize for Leadership is awarded to high school juniors in recognition of their exemplary academic achievement and community service. Awardees will receive:
    $1000 award
    inscribed clock
    two tuition-free courses at Adelphi University, one taken in the fall
    semester and the other in the spring semester of their senior year
    Adelphi University library privileges
    invitation to a events honoring a leading scholar, artist or political
    figure visiting the University during that academic year

Eligibility
Applicants must be high school juniors and residents of Garden City.


Criteria
Applicants must:

    show a record of superior academic performance, in relation to
    their academic potential
    demonstrate exceptional leadership skills in voluntary pursuits
    and/or community service activities
    be available to attend the Adelphi University Prize for Leadership
    Reception


Requirements
Applicants must submit the following documentation to their school counselor by the due date:

    completed application form (PDF 82KB)
    minimum of one letter of recommendation from a high school
    administrator, school counselor or high school teacher
    minimum of one letter of recommendation from a supervisor with
    firsthand knowledge of the applicant's community service work. Each letter must include a description of the activity and the number of hours per week or per activity contributed by the student.

Interview
In addition to submitting the mandatory documents, applicants may be asked for a interview by members of the Adelphi University Prize for Leadership Committee.
