Specializations

Learn to craft physical education to maximize learning for those with physical or intellectual disabilities. Through coursework, you’ll understand how to apply knowledge of the characteristics, considerations, and movement abilities of common impairments to meet the needs, limitations and capacities of students with disabilities.

Adelphi University’s mission in sport-based youth development is to lead the field in education, training and research, thereby enhancing the practice of sport-based youth development locally, nationally and globally. This specialization prepares students for leadership positions in nonprofit organizations, interscholastic/intercollegiate sports settings, school systems, sport and summer camps, recreational and athletic leagues, professional sports settings and the corporate social responsibility sector of for-profit organizations.

Acquire skills necessary to be a school district leader for positions such as athletic director, health and physical education director, or other district leader positions. The focus is on administrative functions of supervision, leadership development, district governance, financial management of district resources (human, facilities information and budgetary), curriculum innovation, and technological initiatives. Upon completion of programmatic requirements, students  will earn the New York State District License. Students need an initial physical education teacher license to enroll.

Our students gain valuable hands-on experience that can be directly applied to their work as teachers, coaches and administrators. You’ll have the opportunity to apply for the innovative tuition-free Sport-Based Youth Development Fellowship, where students gain valuable experience and connections through a field-based partnership. Applicants must submit the following:

  • Graduate application and $60 fee
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Personal essay
  • Official transcripts from all prior institutions and proof of bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution
  • Résumé (preferred)

Please note that this program does not prepare for New York state teacher certification.
