Guide for International Applicants

Submit official academic records from the secondary schools, colleges, and universities required for your applicant type.

Records issued in a language other than English must be accompanied by an English translation.

Applicants with academic work completed outside the United States must submit a course-by-course credential evaluation when required.

Evaluations must be completed by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).

Adelphi recommends The Evaluation Company (TEC), IEE, ECE, or WES, but evaluations from any NACES member organization are accepted.

Applicants who are required to demonstrate English-language proficiency must meet Adelphi’s published English Proficiency Requirements or qualify for an approved exemption.

The English Proficiency Requirements page provides the current accepted examinations, minimum scores, and exemption criteria.

Applicants who do not meet Adelphi’s minimum English-language proficiency requirements may be considered for an approved pathway program, including the International Accelerator.

International graduate applicants must meet all admission requirements established by their intended graduate, doctoral, advanced certificate, or postgraduate program.

Applicants must demonstrate completion of a bachelor’s degree or accepted equivalent. Applicants with three-year bachelor’s degrees will be reviewed in accordance with Adelphi’s international academic requirements and the standards of the intended academic program.

International undergraduate students may be considered for Adelphi merit-based scholarships, but students should not plan on institutional scholarships covering the full cost of attendance. International students are also generally not eligible for U.S. federal student loans, so it is important to develop a financing plan before enrolling.

If your academic work was completed outside the United States and a credential evaluation is required for your applicant type, you must submit a course-by-course evaluation completed by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). Choose a NACES-member evaluation company and follow its instructions for submitting your academic records. Your school may be asked to send transcripts directly to the evaluation company. The company will evaluate your coursework and credentials in the context of the U.S. educational system and provide Adelphi with an evaluation.

Fees are determined by the credential evaluation company and are separate from Adelphi’s tuition and fees. Because international students should plan for the full cost of attendance in addition to application-related expenses, we encourage you to review your anticipated educational costs early in the admission process. Adelphi’s current international cost-of-attendance estimates are available through International Services and are updated annually.

Yes. Graduate applicants may submit an unofficial course-by-course evaluation while the official evaluation is being processed. This allows Admissions to continue reviewing your application in the meantime. You will still need to submit the official evaluation in order to move forward with enrollment.

Adelphi generally does not waive the enrollment deposit. Your deposit confirms your intention to enroll and is applied toward your tuition and fees; it is not an additional charge on top of your bill. Submitting your deposit also allows Adelphi to move forward with important enrollment steps, including access to the process for requesting an I-20 or DS-2019.

After you are admitted and submit your enrollment deposit, you will receive access to the International Services Portal through your Adelphi email account. You will use the portal to submit the documents and financial information required for your I-20 or DS-2019

Required documents generally include your admission or readmission letter, valid passport biographical page, Affidavit of Support, financial documentation, and any applicable Adelphi scholarship or assistantship award letter. Additional documents may be required depending on your immigration status or program. Review I-20 and DS-2019 requirements

Students experiencing visa delays may request a Late Start Authorization. Approval is not automatic and requires academic approval, the ability to remain enrolled full-time in in-person coursework, and a revised arrival date within one week of the original program start date. If late arrival cannot be approved, you may need to defer your admission to a future semester.

Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to defer your admission and request a new I-20 for a future term. International Admissions and International Services will help you understand the appropriate next steps.

Non-native English speakers must demonstrate English proficiency unless they meet one of Adelphi’s approved exemption criteria. Adelphi currently accepts TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, Michigan English Test and LanguageCert.

You may qualify for an exemption based on your educational background. For example, Adelphi currently recognizes students who attended a British, American, Canadian or Australian curriculum school where English was the medium of instruction, as well as several other exemption criteria. Because eligibility depends on your specific educational history, review the current requirements or contact International Admissions for guidance.
