Music and Music Education Department

Music and Music Education Department

Develop your musical potential, artistry and intellectual curiosity in Adelphi’s Department of Music.

Our music programs combine rigorous musical training with broad academic exploration, preparing students to thrive as performers, composers, scholars, educators and creative professionals.

Located just outside New York City, Adelphi’s music program offers the resources of a close-knit music community alongside access to one of the world’s most vibrant musical landscapes. This proximity offers unparalleled exposure, powerful networking opportunities, and a front-row seat to the professional world, opening doors to vibrant, successful careers in the arts.

Our distinguished music faculty—active performers, composers, scholars, and educators—mentor students through personalized instruction and hands-on experiences. You’ll study music in a collaborative environment that values technical excellence, creative expression, and cultural awareness.

The dedication and patience of Adelphi’s professors helped me grow into my full potential. Adelphi shapes the future of our music classrooms by teaching important skills—skills that have enabled me to become an elementary school teacher.

Student Life and Hands-On Learning

Adelphi’s interdisciplinary approach encourages musicians to think expansively. Whether you focus on performance, composition, music education, or music studies, you’ll engage with complementary disciplines across the arts and humanities to build versatility, adaptability, and a strong professional foundation.

Professional Relationships and Internships

Adelphi’s proximity to New York City allows music and music education students to pursue unique opportunities. Through internships, students gain hands-on experience, build their résumés, and deepen their understanding of the music industry. The department also offers the Choral Scholar Internship, a selective paid performance opportunity in a professional ensemble setting.

Student Clubs and Organizations

Adelphi music students can join existing clubs or start their own, connecting with peers, sharing creativity, and gaining hands-on experience performing, collaborating, and engaging with the campus and local music scene.

Study with Visionaries

Imagine learning from a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer whose works have captivated audiences worldwide. At Adelphi, professors like Paul Moravec, DMA, bring their award-winning creativity into the classroom, mentoring students to take risks, explore new ideas and make music that moves the world.

Creative Exploration and Innovation

Creative work is at the heart of your music education at Adelphi. Our music faculty lead projects that encourage students to refine their craft, explore new ideas and engage with a wide range of musical styles and traditions. As a music major, you might:

  • Perform in vocal or instrumental ensembles
  • Present solo or chamber recitals
  • Compose or arrange original music
  • Collaborate with students across the performing arts
  • Share your work at Adelphi’s Scholarship and Creative Works Conference, concerts and regional events

The SPARK Center (Scholars Pursuing Arts, Research and Knowledge) supports undergraduate musicians with project funding, mentorship, and resources to develop creative and scholarly music projects.

High School Programs

High school students interested in music can take part in hands-on experiences at Adelphi that offer a look at college-level music study. Through workshops and event-style music programs, students explore performance, composition, music technology and more while working with faculty and current students. Some options also let students earn college credit.

We also hold an annual Junior Audition Workshop for junior-year high school students to prepare for their senior year college auditions with confidence.
