An Interview With Paul Moravec, DMA

University Professor and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Paul Moravec has written close to 200 works throughout his vibrant career. All have been guided by a simple but challenging approach.

“I’m a composer, and I write for myself really as an audience member,” he says. “I’m not trying to impress myself as a composer. I’m trying to impress myself as an audience member. … I imagine myself getting a ticket, going into the concert hall, sitting down and saying, ‘Okay, amaze me. Surprise me. Astound me.’ ”

Hear more from Dr. Moravec in this, the first installment of the new Celebration of Scholarly Research & Creative Works video series.

He’ll tell you about his latest work, the oratorio Sanctuary Road, which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2020; his opera The Shining, based on the Stephen King novel; his Pulitzer Prize-winning chamber work, Tempest Fantasy, inspired by the Shakespeare play; and many more of his works.

And look forward to the second Scholars and Artists video to learn how biology Professor Lawrence Hobbie, PhD, and Associate Professor Eugenia Villa-Cuesta, PhD, are transforming the approach to STEM teaching and learning.
