Advisers can help you reach your academic goals.

Every undergraduate student at Adelphi University is assigned an academic adviser. Once you declare a major, a faculty member from your department will be your adviser.

Before the first semester, first-year students meet with an academic adviser to plan the fall schedule. These advisers are made available to assist students as they transition to the first semester of college. The adviser you meet with initially may or may not be your assigned adviser.

Transfer students should contact the Office of Academic Services and Retention, or the office of their declared major, to schedule an appointment with an academic adviser to plan their first semester schedule.

At the start of your first semester, the name of your academic adviser and the adviser’s office location, telephone number and email address is listed under “My Adviser” when you log-in to the CLASS system. If there is an adviser change it is indicated there as well.

As a new student, you should contact your academic adviser during the first semester. Introduce yourself, set up a meeting and start to build a relationship with your academic adviser before registration time.

Pre-Major (Undeclared) Students

Students who have not declared a major are assigned an adviser from the Office of Academic Services or from the Office of the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences upon entering the University as a freshmen. They advise the pre-major students until they declare their major.

Changing Majors

Students who wish to change majors or who have questions about the planning or progress of their degrees that cannot be answered by their major adviser, or who just want a second opinion, can seek the advice and assistance of academic advisers in the Office of the Dean of their academic unit or the Office of Academic Services and Retention.

What do I do if I have not been assigned an adviser?

If you do not have an adviser and have declared a major, contact your major department. If you do not have an adviser and are undeclared, contact the Office of Academic Services and Retention.

Can I change my adviser?

You may request a different adviser at any time. To change your adviser, contact your department if you have declared a major; if you are undeclared, contact the Office of Academic Services and Retention.

What if I need more help?

In the Office of the Dean of every academic unit and in the Office of Academic Services and Retention, there are individuals who are there to help students with advisement. If you have questions about planning or the progress toward your degree, or if you want additional advice, you may consult with either an adviser in your academic unit or in the Office of Academic Services and Retention.

The Office of Academic Services and Retention oversees all advisement and welcomes all students.  You may be sent to the office for a signature or you may want to see a member of the staff if you have academic concerns outside of your school or major. If you aren’t sure where to go with a question or concern try this office first!
