If you’re already a licensed registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) and need a master’s degree, the master’s degree in nutrition online from Adelphi allows you to advance your career as a nutrition researcher, educator, administrator, advocate or private practitioner.
If you’re interested in a career as a registered dietitian, the master’s degree in nutrition and dietetics online from Adelphi prepares you to pass the Commission on Dietetic Registration’s Registration Examination for Dietitians, which leads to the registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) designation. With a master’s degree in nutrition and dietetics under your belt, you’ll be qualified to work with communities in hospitals, schools, nursing homes, public health departments, and health and fitness clubs, or counsel individual clients in your own private practice. You can also contribute your expertise in the food service and safety, workplace wellness or research fields.
Interested in earning an MS in Nutrition and Dietetics to become a registered dietitian or pursue another dietetics career? If you already have an MS in Nutrition from Adelphi, or are currently enrolled in that program, you can now earn your MS in Nutrition and Dietetics in less time.
With Adelphi’s Advanced Pathway plan, you can seamlessly enroll in the new MS in nutrition and dietetics program, and Adelphi will waive the seven overlap courses between both master’s degree programs.
The University will waive the following seven overlap courses:
Students completing the Advanced Pathway in nutrition will typically be taking 8 to 10 credits per semester.
All told, students in the Advanced Pathway will complete 41 credits (25 credits of coursework, 16 credits of fieldwork).

In both the master’s degree in nutrition and the master’s degree in nutrition and dietetics online programs, your education revolves around a suite of supervising experiential learning rotations, comprising a total of 785 hours of work in professional settings. You’ll be able to locate and secure your own fieldwork preceptors with support and guidance from nutrition program faculty local to you, which means you can complete the rotations from anywhere in the country. These experiences ensure that you develop a well-rounded understanding of various subfields—including acute care, long-term care, food service, nutrition research and community nutrition—as well as the ability to tailor your services to diverse populations.

The MS in nutrition program is a part-time, 34-credit online program that is best suited for current RDNs who are looking to complete an MS, as well as other healthcare and wellness professionals interested in expanding their services to include nutrition. The Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND)-accredited MS in nutrition and dietetics is a 62-credit program that includes online coursework and supervised experiential learning and prepares students for a career as a registered dietitian.
An MS in nutrition will put you on the path for a career in public health jobs, WIC, nutrition education, fitness jobs and related fields. Students who earn an MS in nutrition and dietetics find work in clinical dietetics at hospitals or outpatient facilities, as pediatric dietitians or food service managers, or working in community nutrition, research or private practice.
An MS in nutrition and dietetics, with successful completion of all coursework plus required Supervised Experiential Learning, is a necessary step toward becoming a registered dietician. Upon completion, students receive a Verification Statement that allows them to take the RDN credentialing exam.
The Advanced Pathway is for students who completed the MS in nutrition and now want to complete the MS in nutrition and dietetics and become an RDN. Adelphi University doesn’t offer a BS in nutrition.
Both programs have fully online coursework. There are no in-person courses. Our faculty members are based at our Garden City campus and are available for teleconference sessions.
