Adelphi University has received a generous contribution of $1 million from Amy and Horace Hagedorn to lead the effort to design and construct a new Child Activity Center for the University. This leadership gift will allow Adelphi to move into the design phase for the new facility. This is the second million dollar gift in two years from the Hagedorns to the University. In recognition of the Hagedorns' leadership and support, the new facility will be named the Amy Maiello Hagedorn Child Activity Center.

Located on Adelphi's Garden City campus, and open to Adelphi faculty, staff, students, and area residents, the Child Activity Center provides daytime child care services to children between the ages of three to five years. The new 7,000-square-foot facility will create a state-of-the-art learning environment for the children, while allowing for integration of the University's early childhood academic programs into the Center's curriculum and philosophy.

"Future academic success depends on high-quality early childhood preparation," said Amy Hagedorn. "Adelphi has a long history of preparing teachers and providing professional development for them. This new Center will provide future and current teachers with a wonderful learning laboratory, while giving pre-schoolers a rich, age appropriate, and nurturing environment."

"We are grateful for the Hagedorns' continued support," said President Robert A. Scott. "We are especially thankful for Amy's vision on this project. She is steadfastly committed to ensuring access to both quality early childhood education and high-quality teacher training. The new facility will be developed around the best practices in education and research."

The Child Activity Center has been providing part- and full-day programs for pre-schoolers for more than 25 years. Graduate students in Adelphi's Schools of Education and Social Work, and the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, participate in field experiences at the Center, thereby enhancing their knowledge of child development and early childhood curriculum.
