The Teaching Fellows Program at the Derner School of Psychology is tailored for graduate students aspiring to excel in teaching roles within undergraduate settings.

Our program offers comprehensive didactic and instructional training, empowering students with practical teaching skills and pedagogical insights.

Program Components

This course is designed to prepare psychology graduate students as teachers of psychology at the undergraduate level and as teaching assistants. Grading is on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis.

  • Prepare psychology graduate students for undergraduate-level teaching and assistantship roles.
  • Covers syllabus development, instructional material selection, testing, and evaluation methodologies.
  • Explores classroom management strategies and theoretical aspects of psychology teaching.

Session Content:

  1. Teaching Philosophy, Teaching Strategies and Classroom Management Strategies (3.5 hours)
  2. Syllabus Preparation, Grading Process, University Support Services (1.5 hours)
  3. Demonstration and Critique — Teaching demonstration by students (3 hours, 20-to-30-minute teaching demonstrations using principles covered in the seminar. Students will be provided with the lecture materials in the form of a book chapter/articles, etc., prior to the seminar)
  • Conduct a 30-minute in-class teaching demonstration under faculty observation.
  • Demonstrations integrate principles covered in the seminar.
  • Lecture content includes personality theory, psychopathology, or developmental psychology.

Complete a teaching observation of a full-time faculty undergraduate class session.

Assemble a teaching portfolio, including:

  • Samples of teaching demonstration lectures.
  • Classroom observation feedback report.
  • Syllabus and statement of teaching philosophy.

Eligibility

  • Completion of the Teaching Fellows Program seminar.
  • Observation of a full-time faculty undergraduate class session.
  • Successful completion of the 30-minute teaching demonstration with full-time faculty.

Application Requirements

  • Applicants must have previously completed the course they intend to teach.
  • Experienced teachers should possess positive student evaluations and classroom observations.
  • Fulfillment of all requirements for the first year of the PhD program in Psychology or MA in Psychology.

Please note that fulfillment of the above criteria does not guarantee a teaching assignment.
