Our math education STEAM program’s urban focus invites students to engage with the unique opportunities and challenges of teaching math, science and computer science in schools today. Courses are offered at our exciting new Manhattan Center, while your practice teaching can be in New York schools of your choice. You’ll also hone your creativity at our STEM-focused research and practice institute.
The MA in STEAM teaching and learning allows you to choose your teaching expertise in math, science or computer science, then emphasizes creative ways of helping students engage in STEM. You will learn how to make sense of school culture and student identity and develop powerful instructional skills. Three maker lab-based courses will focus on integrating ideas across STEM using art and design, giving you a strong foundation in design thinking, learning theory, and educational technology and equity. Specifically, getting a master’s degree in math education in New York will help you learn the skills to open a wide variety of teaching careers. In only 12 months, you will be prepared to teach, with all your accreditation criteria met. Your final MA project challenges you to create and design your own STEAM teacher workshop, to be piloted on campus or at a partner school.
The Manhattan Institute for STEM and the Imagination (MIXI) is housed at the Adelphi University Manhattan Center.

All candidates for the mathematics education master’s degree program must submit the following:
Students must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and proof of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution to pursue a master’s degree in Mathematics Education: STEAM Teaching and Learning.
A master’s degree in mathematics education is the foundation for teaching at any level, from grade school to college and beyond. It is also a key part of a portfolio when pursuing leadership positions in education administration or curriculum development, and can be a foundation for a career outside of education in data or financial analysis, actuarial science, and other related fields.

Our maker-lab model blends art, design, computing and hands-on fabrication with mathematical ideas, helping candidates make sense of abstract concepts through real materials and challenges. Working as a math teacher in New York state requires successful completion of a bachelor’s degree in mathematics (a minimum of 30-credits in mathematics) and completion of required courses from a state-approved teacher preparation program, and passing state certification exams. New teachers are required to earn a master’s degree within five years of accepting their first position to obtain professional certification. Our STEAM MA program is geared towards candidates with the 30 credits in approved mathematics courses seeking a master’s degree in education and New York State teacher certification for grades 7–12 mathematics.
