Recognizing a Bright Idea

Charles Goulding knows a bright idea when he sees one. For much of his career, he has worked to identify research and development tax credits related to product and process improvements for major manufacturing companies.

When the United States Congress passed the Energy Policy Act (EPAct) in 2005, Mr. Goulding saw an immediate opportunity to use his expertise in a rapidly emerging field.

“It’s really an unconventional law,” he says. “It’s right at the intersection of engineering and law.”

He founded Energy Tax Savers to help large and small Long Island firms take advantage of new tax deductions and credits for environmentally responsible energy use. He advises businesses on when and how to upgrade their lighting and reduce electrical usage.

Mr. Goulding, who is also an attorney and C.P.A., has operated a private accounting and law practice since 1977. He points out that his specialized knowledge sets him apart from his peers.

“They are a lot of lawyers and accountants,” he says. “Not too many of them have science and technical backgrounds.”

Energy Tax Savers is one of the first tax firms to specialize in green and sustainability tax issues. As a result, much of Mr. Goulding’s responsibilities have been to educate the marketplace.

“When you have something new to work on, you really have to create the market,” he says.

Since 2005, he has traveled across the country presenting seminars and speaking at conferences. Today, he has over 100 regional and national clients, including many of Long Island’s leading retailers and manufacturers.

Prior to founding Energy Tax Savers, Mr. Goulding served as a vice president with the Dover Corporation, a multi-faceted industrial manufacturer with annual sales of $6.5 billion, and later as managing director of Cooper Industries, also a multi-billion dollar manufacturer of lighting and electrical equipment.

He is a former president of the New York Chapter of the Tax Executives Institute and a board member of the CITE (Council for International Tax Education).  He has published articles in such publications as, Business Operating Management, Corporate Business Taxation Monthly, International Business, International Tax Journal, and The CPA Journal.

Mr. Goulding and his wife Janet live in Oyster Bay, New York with their three children. In his spare time he enjoys tennis, golf, and reading.
