Transgender Awareness Week runs from November 13 to November 19 this year and for the second consecutive year, Adelphi will hold events for the entire community.

National Coming Out Day is October 11 and, this year, Adelphi University celebrated it with a series of events over several days.

The Equitable Adelphi Action Team was formed in the summer of 2020 to help create and sustain an inclusive campus community. Formed by the Division of Student Affairs, the team consists of faculty members, administrators and students. Now is a great time for students to join and use their voices to bring forth change on campus.

Leading our "Many Voices. One Adelphi." message is the renowned poet and our Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Jacqueline Jones LaMon, JD. Her welcome-back-to-campus campaign features banners across our main campus highlighting the diversity of our student-led organizations. They promote our vibrant and engaged community and the voices and experiences of all our students.

For her senior thesis, physics major Gabriella (Gabi) Vidad '21 used remote sensing and widely available resources such as Google Earth to chart the severity of coral reef changes in the Philippines.

Furthering diversity and inclusion efforts at the University, the Web Development and Digital Strategy (WDDS) have added individual pronouns to the employee directory.

Now in its third year, our Hispanic Community Partnership Program has more than tripled in attendance and is drawing interest from Hispanic teens as far away as California. The program is just one part of our commitment to student success and access to education, and a significant stepping-stone toward our goal to be a Hispanic-Serving Institution.

In early May 2016, Adelphi University raised its first Pride flag as a permanent representation of the University's support for and inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community. Its appearance on campus was a combined effort of the LGBTQ+ Task Force, the LGBTQ+ and Allies Committee and the LGBTQ+ Empowerment Group.

As a nursing major at Nassau Community College, Will Torres, now a rising senior and first-generation college student, realized he wanted to explore other options at a four-year institution. He wanted a campus close to his Glen Cove hometown that offered small classes and individually tailored instruction. He also wanted a friendly and inclusive campus.

Every year, Adelphi honors four exceptional employees with a President's Award for Excellence and one employee with the President's Award for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. According to President Christine M. Riordan, the honorees “have won the admiration of their peers and colleagues by providing an extraordinary level of service to the University, and working to advance our shared values and goals."

Adelphi is a safe, welcoming and inclusive home for all, and the Campus Pride Index recognizes our unwavering commitment to our LGBTQ+ community. Our stars continue to climb ever closer to 100 percent. We are very proud.

As we head into the end of the spring semester, we reflect on how we've overcome a year of unexpected change and challenge to work together in new and innovative ways to stay safe, learn and thrive—as Panthers do!

Welcome Weekend signifies the official start to an Adelphi Panther's journey. The weekend is full of memory-making events and activities, a ceremony that officially welcomes students to the academic community, and, of course, a ton of Panther pride.

June is a time when individuals across the country and the world celebrate the LGBTQ+ community as part of Pride Month. Adelphi University, too, celebrates the many contributions of the LGBTQ+ community within our campus and honors their continued struggle for equity within our nation and the world.

Since May 2016, the Adelphi community has been greeted by the sight of an LGBTQ+ Pride flag. Displayed between the Ruth S. Harley University Center and the Hagedorn Hall of Enterprise, the flag is a permanent representation of the University's support for and inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community.
