Dear Adelphi Community,

October is LGBTQ+ History month! Adelphi stands with pride to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and values the lived and shared experiences of each member of our community. With joy, we celebrate innumerable contributions within every school, discipline and professional community.

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion launched its inaugural “First Fridays” on October 2, 2020. “First Fridays” is an open and responsive space for students to have meaningful conversation around topics that are relevant to their college experience. The discussions are hosted by different campus partners and focus on topics surrounding diversity, equity, inclusion and intersectionality.

We kicked off LGBTQ+ History Month with the inaugural DEI First Friday, devoted to LGBTQ+ history, awareness, and opportunities for support. The discussion was led by Adam Visconti, Associate Director, Residential Life and Housing and the Chair of the LGBTQ+ Task Force and Erin Furey, Outreach, Training and Mental Health Promotion Coordinator of the Student Counseling Center. The session built on the September 30 conversation hosted by transgender artist and activist Imara Jones, Taking a Stand Even When it Hurts, which was part of the Fall Arts Festival 2020.

Adelphi has held four other LGBTQ+ History Month events in October: a National Coming Out Day Open Mic, presented by Adelphi’s Manhattan Center; a National Coming Out Day Panel, presented by Adelphi’s Garden City Campus; a talk by LGBTQ+ speaker and former professional hockey player Brock McGillis, hosted by Adelphi Athletics and Pride Trivia with the Center for Student Involvement and Christopher Street Tours.

To continue the conversation and further embody Adelphi’s commitment to the inclusion and equity of our LGBTQ+ community, please join us Saturday, October 24, from 3-4 pm: LGBTQ+ and Allies Panel: Through the Years with the LGBTQ+ and Allies Alumni Affinity Group.

In Unity,

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
The LGTBQ+ Allies Committee
The LGBTQ+ Task Force
The Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA)
