J Exchange Visitor Categories

Foreign nationals participating primarily in teaching, lecturing, observing, or consulting activities within Adelphi University academic departments. Research may also be permitted.

Participation Limits

• Minimum stay: 3 weeks
• Maximum stay: 5 years

Primary Activities

• Teaching, Lecturing, Observing, Consulting, Research (when permitted)

Eligibility Requirements

Participants must:

• Not be candidates for tenure-track positions;
• Not have participated in and completed a J-1 Professor/Research Scholar program within the previous 24 months; and
• Not have participated in a J program during the preceding 12 months unless an exception applies:
  • Transfer continuation of an active Professor/Research Scholar program;
  • Previous J stay was less than six months; or
  • Previous category was Short-Term Scholar.

Minimum Academic Credentials

• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree with appropriate experience in the field
• Demonstrated English language proficiency sufficient for program participation

Employment

• Compensation from Adelphi University is permitted when employment activities are part of the exchange program.
• Occasional lectures or short-term consultations may be authorized by the Responsible Officer if incidental to the exchange visitor’s primary program objectives.

Foreign nationals visiting temporarily to lecture, observe, consult, train, or demonstrate special skills.

Participation Limits

• Minimum stay: 1 day
• Maximum stay: 6 months
• Extensions beyond six months are not permitted.

Primary Activities

• Lecturing, Observing, Consulting, Training, Demonstrating special skills, Participating in: Seminars, Workshops, Conferences, Study tours, Professional meetings, Similar educational and professional activities

Eligibility Requirements

Participants must:

• Not be candidates for tenure-track positions;
• Meet applicable J-1 participation bar requirements where relevant.

Minimum Academic Credentials

• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree with relevant professional experience
• Demonstrated English language proficiency

Employment

• Occasional lectures and consultations may be authorized with prior RO approval.
