Adelphi University faculty and academic departments may invite qualified international scholars and professors to participate in academic, research, teaching, and professional activities through the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program.

J-1 Categories
Program Length: 3 weeks–5 years
Primary Activities
- Teaching and lecturing
- Observing and consulting
- Research, when permitted
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree with relevant experience
- English language proficiency
- Not a candidate for a tenure-track position
- Must meet applicable J-1 participation requirements
Employment
- Adelphi compensation may be permitted when the employment is part of the approved exchange program.
- Occasional lectures or short-term consultations may be authorized by the Responsible Officer if incidental to the exchange visitor’s primary program objectives.

Employment

Incidental teaching or consulting may be permitted when related to the exchange program.
Program Length: 1 day–6 months
Extensions: Not permitted

- Lecturing and observing

- Demonstrating special skills
- Seminars, workshops, conferences, and professional meetings

How to Initiate the DS-2019 Process
The faculty supervisor within the academic school is responsible for submitting the required documentation to the Office of International Services.
Required Forms
- Invitation Letter from the Academic Dean
- Updated Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Research Proposal outlining the proposed research and/or teaching activities
- English Proficiency Report
Eligibility Criteria
Academic departments must ensure that prospective scholars meet the following requirements:
- Minimum bachelor’s degree with relevant academic or professional experience
- Proposed activities are appropriate for the requested J-1 category
- Position is temporary and non-tenure-track
- Demonstrated English language proficiency through an objective evaluation
- Program is conducted primarily in person (maximum 40% remote participation)
- Department is prepared to provide academic supervision and support
Invitation Letter Requirements
The invitation letter must include:
- Full legal name (as listed on passport)
- Date of birth
- Country of citizenship
- Contact information
- J-1 category (Professor, Research Scholar, or Short-Term Scholar)
- Site of activity
- Faculty supervisor
- Program start and end dates
- Field of research (J-1 Subject Field Codes List)
- Description of proposed activities
- University funding or compensation (if applicable)
The prospective scholar must submit:
- DS-2019 Request Form
- Copy of valid passport (biographical page)
- Health Insurance Guarantee
- Affidavit of Support
- Supporting financial documentation for all funding sources
Proof of health insurance coverage meeting J-1 requirements must be provided upon arrival.
