Use the campus as a classroom to explore contour line, value, composition and the principles of design.

This credit-bearing program is scheduled to take place from July 13-August 2, 2025 on Adelphi’s Garden City Campus.

Hone your skills and develop a unique creative vision, then prepare to make your mark in the art world. In this course, students will explore the fundamental drawing and design principles common in all two-dimensional art. In a series of exercises and practical assignments students will explore line, shape, scale, value, perspective, and gesture, to achieve an awareness of form and an appreciation of the way it supports and amplifies meaning in art. Students will work in a variety of wet and dry media as well as collage. Studio work will be augmented with visual presentations and peer critiques.

You will:

  • Explore the fundamentals of drawing and design
  • Demonstrate basic drawing skills using a variety of drawing materials
  • Render a range of subjects from direct observation and visual interpretation
  • Learn to articulate your critical response to design projects in regular classroom critiques.
  • Research an artist of your choosing and create a self-portrait in that artist’s style (design and medium)
