Frequently Asked Questions about Adelphi’s Pre-College Programs in NY

Enrolling in a pre-college program offers a number of benefits. You can gain exposure to college life and engage in classroom experiences that can help in choosing a major. You can also gain valuable, early experience in critical thinking, research and presentation skills.

The one-week Academies are short, non-credit, hands-on experiences that let students explore potential majors and career paths in an engaging, low-pressure setting. They’re ideal for students who want to test the waters or fit a program into a busy summer schedule.

By contrast, the three-week Pre-College programs are credit-bearing courses that provide a deeper academic experience—students complete college-level coursework, earn three transferable Adelphi credits, and experience both academic and residential life on campus.

  • Rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible to participate in our credit-bearing courses.
  • Rising high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible to participate in non-credit academies.

The following stipulations apply to international pre-college applicants:

  • If you already have an F-1 visa and are studying in the U.S., you can join the Pre-College Program during the summer.
  • If you are in the U.S. on a tourist visa, you may also take part in the program as a recreational or short-term activity.
  • If you are outside the U.S., please contact your local U.S. Embassy or Consulate to find out what travel documents you’ll need.

Adelphi University cannot issue an I-20 form for this program.

Adelphi University requires all non-native English speakers to take and pass one of several available proficiency exams. You can submit your TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test (DET) results to precollege@adelphi.edu.

Because the program schedules overlap, students must choose one program per summer. Many students take part in different years—for example, attending a one-week academy one summer and returning for a three-week pre-college course the next.

Yes. Students who complete any of Adelphi’s Pre-College programs can receive the Adelphi Advantage Award—a $1,000 annual scholarship that can be combined with other awards.
