Adelphi’s Robotics Program offers students an engaging, hands-on environment to learn about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through design, programming and competition-based learning.

Beyond technical skills, robotics fosters teamwork, leadership, organization and problem-solving as students work collaboratively to design, build and program robots. Adelphi’s program includes three teams: VEX Robotics, LEGO Robotics and AVR Drone. Students also participate in and host robotics competitions throughout the year at local, statewide and national levels.

It’s not like a competition where you knock your opponents down. You’re building them up.

Who the Program Serves

The Adelphi University’s Robotics Program serves students who:

  1. are enrolled in grades 7–12
  2. are New York State residents (or permanent residents)
  3. are economically disadvantaged and/or will benefit from academic enrichment
  4. could benefit from academic enrichment

The Middle School LEGO Robotics Program introduces students to engineering and programming using LEGO NXT or EV3 kits. Students design and build robots to complete challenge-based competitions that develop creativity, collaboration and technical skills.

Each year, more than 20 teams from Long Island, Queens and statewide Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) programs participate in the Adelphi LEGO Robotics Competition.

The VEX Robotics Design System provides students with an opportunity to explore STEM fields through hands-on engineering and programming. Students design, build and program robots while developing teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills.

VEX Robotics is used in middle schools, high schools and university labs worldwide and continues to expand as an accessible platform for STEM learning and innovation.

FAQs: Robotics Program

No prior experience is required. Students of all skill levels are welcome, and instruction is designed to support beginners while also challenging advanced participants.

Students design, build, and program robots while working in teams. They also participate in competitions, problem-solving challenges and STEM-focused learning activities.

No. The Robotics Program is offered at no cost to eligible students.

All necessary robotics equipment, kits and materials are provided through the program. Students do not need to purchase their own supplies.

The Adelphi University Robotics Program meets on weekdays after school and on Saturdays.

Sessions are held at designated program sites and/or partner locations, with additional travel for competitions and special events.

Most Science and Technology Entry Program programming is held on Adelphi University’s Garden City, NY campus, primarily in the Science Building.

Participants in the NYS Science and Technology Entry Program gain stronger academic skills, exposure to STEM careers, college preparation support and opportunities for hands-on learning and mentorship.
