For Sarah Marino ’25, academic research is “more than just textbooks.” The dance major, who minored in communications, developed her craft through a SPARK summer research fellowship. “As a dancer,” she said, “movement is my first language.” Movement, for Sarah, is academic investigation. Through a Summer Research Fellowship from the SPARK (Scholars Pursuing Arts, Research and Knowledge) Center, she had the opportunity to develop that practice and pursue her artistic vision. The scholarship allowed her to work with other dancers and learn from them while developing leadership skills. SPARK Fellows also work closely with faculty. With the guidance of her faculty mentor, Department of Dance chair Orion Duckstein, Sarah found new inspirations and explored her own ideas more deeply. Duckstein wants to see his students succeed, according to Sarah, while finding their own paths. “Having somebody throughout the entire process who knows me as a dancer and as a person is a really great tool to fall back on,” she said. At Adelphi, research is not just for faculty or graduate students. The SPARK Center opens the door for first-year students to dive into undergraduate research projects that broaden their scholarly horizons. From first-year to postgraduate, students expand on what they’ve learned in the classroom, benefiting from the experience of dedicated and supportive faculty. They gain valuable, real-world experience that’s reflected on their résumés and graduate school applications. And, most importantly, they explore their passions. “It was here in the Adelphi dance department that I learned that ‘research’ is such a broad term,” Sarah said. “It’s the curiosity and hunger for knowledge. Undergraduate Research & Creativity: A Study in Movement

Computer science major Daniel Alvarez ’25 grew up playing football. A class in machine learning made him wonder if a computer could be trained to predict an opposing team’s moves. He’s presenting his research at Adelphi’s 2025 Scholarship and Creative Works Conference.   At Adelphi, students find a supportive academic community. Alvarez was able to build his inventive and unusual AI Playbook with the guidance of Sukun Li, PhD, assistant professor of mathematics and computer sciences. Together, they analyzed the predictive power of machine learning through a new lens: competitive sports. They narrowed down variables and ran tests to find a workable algorithm and compared that to what a good coach does every game. In the process, Dr. Li learned about football and Alvarez learned about the sorts of human intuition that computers can’t manage. Extraordinary Minds: The AI Playbook—Enhancing Football Strategy

Honors College student MacKenzie Pina spent a summer a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Kenya. As co-captain of Adelphi’s swim team, she spent winter break training in Puerto Rico. The anthropology major is taking on the world. Adelphi’s Momentum is making things happen. In early 2021, Adelphi’s senior leadership and the entire community began developing our University’s current strategic plan, Momentum 2. The five-year plan emphasizes remaining nimble, modern and relevant in today’s rapidly changing educational environment. It stays true to Adelphi’s mission of providing a rigorous, personalized education that transforms the lives of our students.
