The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) understands that the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is an emergency situation which is affecting many universities and international students who are studying in the United States.

It is important to remember that you are responsible for maintaining your nonimmigrant student status during this time and communicating with your Designated School Official (DSO) with any questions about Adelphi University’s emergency plans.

The Student Exchange and Visitors Program (SEVP) is committed to remaining flexible in allowing schools to make temporary procedural adaptations so nonimmigrant students can continue to make normal forward progress in their program of study. Students can temporarily engage in distance-learning, either from within the U.S. or outside the country, in light of COVID-19. SEVP will provide updated guidance as the scope and length of this situation becomes clearer.

What this means for you:

  • If you wish to return home to be with your families, you can do so and continue to maintain their F-1 status during this time.
  • You must be able to have a secure internet connection to continue your studies and maintain progress in your courses so you remain in full time status.

Students who continue to make normal progress in their course of study remain eligible for admission into the United States. However, because of the changing array of travel restrictions, nonimmigrant students should refer to their local embassy’s website through the U.S. Department of State for any updates about visa issuance. Also, both department of health and CDC websites provide information about current travel restrictions to the United States.

All F and J students and scholars should keep the following items in a safe, secure place so that they are easily accessible in the event of an emergency:

  • Passport and visa
  • Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status: Form I-20, or Certificate of Eligibility: Form DS-2019
  • Form I-766, “Employment Authorization Document,” if applicable
