If you are a mental health professional and are licensed or license-eligible in your state, our seminars are the next step in establishing yourself as an expert in the field of couple psychotherapy. No prior experience treating couples is required.

The Adelphi University Postgraduate Program in Couple Therapy Seminar Series is dedicated to educating and training licensed or license-eligible mental health professionals to become experts in couples therapy.

Our continuing education seminars provide advanced clinical training grounded in systemic therapy and enriched by psychoanalytic perspectives. No prior experience treating couples is required.

Candidates must hold a graduate degree in a mental health discipline (LMHC, LCSW, PsyD, PhD or MD) and be licensed or license-eligible in their state.

Training Philosophy

This program emphasizes systemic therapy enhanced by psychoanalytic concepts. We help clinicians understand the issues couples bring to treatment as co-created relational phenomena shaped by:

  • relational enactments
  • intergenerational patterns and family-of-origin dynamics
  • unresolved experiences from the past

The program also explores how wishes, fears and dreams influence relationships while integrating the clinical use of transference and countertransference. Faculty introduce a range of theories and treatment approaches, allowing participants to develop a clinical framework that best fits their work with couples.

Because effective couples therapy requires both conceptual understanding and practical intervention, the curriculum combines theory with hands-on clinical guidance. Participants learn empirically supported skills and techniques alongside psychodynamic and systemic approaches, with the ultimate goal of helping couples create meaningful and lasting change in whatever form is right for them.

Seminar Format

The Program in Couples Therapy is offered as a continuing education seminar series, allowing professionals to build their training over time while maintaining flexibility in their professional schedules.

  • Live online via Zoom
  • Individual seminars offered throughout the year
  • Register for the seminars that best match your interests and professional goals

The continuing education format allows participants to tailor their learning experience while gaining exposure to a broad range of clinical topics, relationship structures and treatment approaches. An Advanced Certificate in Couples Therapy will be available for professionals seeking a more comprehensive course of study.

Discounts

Registrants registering for 2 or more seminars will receive a 20% discount off the total.
