Couples and the Neurobiology of Psychological Change: A Psychotherapist’s Perspective

There are many advances in neuroscience that can inform the psychotherapeutic process.
In addition to reviewing some of these, the course also introduces psychoanalytically informed Relational Self Psychology and its approach to couple therapy. The overall goal of the course is to further elucidate the couple therapy process and to improve treatment efficacy.
This workshop is part of the Couple Therapy Series.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this seminar series, participants will be able to:
- Describe the evolution of psychoanalytic thought from Freud to contemporary neuropsychoanalysis.
- Explain the foundational principles of the Relational Self Psychology approach to couple therapy.
- Describe basic concepts in brain neurobiology, including Hebb’s axiom.
- Explain the mind as an emergent property of the brain within the mind-brain (M-B) system.
- Discuss predictive processing as a contemporary neurobiological framework.
- Explain the neurobiology of empathy and its relevance to therapeutic relationships.
- Describe neurobiological perspectives on human growth and change.
- Integrate psychoanalytic and neurobiological principles into psychotherapeutic practice.

Christopher A. Scott LCSW-R, CGP

Christopher Scott, LCSW-R, CGP, has 40 years of experience in private practice and serves as Clinical Director of Village Counseling, an approved continuing education provider by the New York State Department of Education. He is a teacher and supervisor in three postgraduate psychoanalytic training programs, including Adelphi University.
His published work includes “Deconstructing Empathy” and “Sustained Empathic Focus and Creating a WE Space in Light of Recent Findings in Neurobiology.”
