For over five decades, the African, Black and Caribbean Studies program has been a hub for scholarship, cultural programming and community engagement. Students explore issues of race, migration, identity, social justice and cultural expression, guided by faculty with expertise across multiple disciplines.
Our interdisciplinary approach draws from history, literature, sociology, political science, art and cultural studies to expand your awareness, gain new perspectives and develop critical skills that can lead to graduate school or successful careers in law, government, journalism, nonprofits, business, education and other fields.
The fact that there is support, spaces where you feel a sense of belonging and community, and peers, professors, and staff who welcome you, care about your growth, and encourage you to push yourself. I would definitely encourage others to come to Adelphi to experience challenging themselves and growing in their identity as a person.

Faculty and Student Research
Critical thinking and real-world engagement are at the heart of your African, Black and Caribbean Studies education at Adelphi. Our faculty are active scholars with interests spanning the African diaspora, social justice, literature, cultural studies and global Black communities. They encourage original inquiry and take an active role in guiding students in exploring historical and contemporary issues and analyzing primary sources.
Students in the program are encouraged to conduct original research and present their findings on campus and at regional and national conferences. You can:

- Take advantage of research opportunities and summer research fellowships offered by Adelphi’s SPARK Center (Scholars Pursuing Arts, Research, and Knowledge)
- Present at Adelphi’s annual Scholarship and Creative Works Conference
- Participate in community-based research projects, engage with cultural organizations, and contribute to public scholarship—building professional networks and practical experience
- Explore national and international fieldwork opportunities for hands-on learning and global perspectives
Distinguished Lecture Series
The Distinguished Lecture Series brings leading scholars, writers, artists, and activists into conversation around history, literature, justice, and democracy through three signature programs: the John Hope Franklin Lecture, the James Baldwin Lecture and the Sojourner Truth Lecture.
