Whether you're meeting with your adviser for the first time or planning your final semester, the Office of Academic Services is here to help.

Find answers to some of the most common advising questions below.

New Student Advising

Your first advising appointment is an opportunity to get to know your adviser and begin planning your academic journey at Adelphi. Together, you’ll discuss your academic interests, degree requirements and first-semester schedule. New first-year and transfer students will also register for classes during this appointment.

Complete the steps on our Before Your Advising Appointment page before you meet with your adviser. This includes gathering test scores and transfer credits, completing any required placement exams and thinking about your academic interests and goals.

Bring any AP, IB, dual enrollment or transfer credit information, placement test results (if applicable) and a list of questions you’d like to discuss with your adviser. See the Before Your Advising Appointment page.

You can ask about:

  • Choosing classes
  • Degree requirements
  • Majors and minors
  • Career interests
  • Internships and study abroad
  • Academic support services
  • Graduation planning

New first-year and transfer students build their first-semester schedule with their adviser and register for classes during the appointment.

Your Adviser

Log in to eCampus and open CLASS. Your adviser’s name and contact information are listed under My Adviser.

It is recommended that you meet with your adviser—either in the Office of Academic Services or in your Academic Major Department at least once each semester before registering for classes. You should also reach out whenever you’re considering changing your major, experiencing academic challenges or planning for graduation.

Your adviser can help you:

  • Understand degree requirements
  • Plan your class schedule
  • Explore majors and minors
  • Stay on track for graduation
  • Connect with academic and campus resources
  • Discuss academic and career goals

If you’ve declared a major, contact your academic department. If you’re undeclared, contact the Office of Academic Services, and we’ll connect you with an adviser.

Yes. If you’ve declared a major, contact your academic department. If you’re undeclared, contact the Office of Academic Services to request a new adviser.

The Office of Academic Services is available to answer questions, provide additional guidance and connect you with the right campus resources. If you’re not sure where to start, start with us.

Choosing or Changing Your Major

That’s perfectly okay. Many students begin college as undeclared. Undeclared students are advised by the Office of Academic Services or the College of Arts and Sciences until they declare a major.

Your adviser can help you explore academic interests, career goals and possible majors. You can also work with the Center for Career and Professional Development to learn how different majors connect to careers.

Undergraduate students must declare a major before completing 60 credits.

Yes. Students change majors for many reasons, and doing so early in your college career often has little or no impact on your graduation timeline.

Before changing your major, you should meet with your adviser to discuss your options. Once you’ve made your decision, you’ll complete a Change of Major form through One-Stop Student Services.

Academic Success

Don’t wait until the end of the semester. The sooner you ask for help, the more options you’ll have. We recommend that you:

  1. Talk with your professor.
  2. Meet with your academic adviser.
  3. Take advantage of free tutoring and academic coaching through the Center for Academic Support and Enrichment (CASE).

ePlanner is Adelphi’s degree planning tool. Your adviser uses ePlanner with you to build your academic plan. It helps you:

  • Track your progress toward graduation.
  • Plan future semesters.
  • Explore “what-if” scenarios for changing majors or adding minors.
  • Prepare for advising appointments.

The Office of Academic Services can help. Whether you have questions about your academic progress, need guidance or simply aren’t sure where to go, we’re here to connect you with the right resources.

Registration & Course Planning

Most continuing students should meet with their adviser before registering each semester to review their academic plan and course selections.

New first-year and transfer students are required to register for their first semester with an adviser.

Registration requirements vary by student and academic program. Even when an advising appointment isn’t required, meeting with your adviser is the best way to ensure you’re choosing courses that keep you on track for graduation.
