So much of how we think about work and jobs is wrong, according to James McGowan, associate dean of professional programs for Adelphi University's College of Professional and Continuing Studies (CPCS). For most of the 20th century, he said, people disputed a two-track approach to careers, debating which had more value: blue-collar or white-collar jobs.
“The choice for many was to pursue a college career or learn a trade. But this approach to the job force no longer works. Today’s workers, blue-collar and white-collar jobs, bear little resemblance to the past generation,” McGowan said. “Technology skills have become a requirement, along with higher-level skills in critical thinking, communication and working with teams.”
What is emerging, he said, is a growing number of jobs that demand these skills, which can be earned with a credential such as a certificate or industry-recognized certification. Adelphi’s continuing education program offers these skill sets through noncredit certificate courses and individual workshops for professional and personal success. The digital credentials can be résumé boosters for the most in-demand professional and personal growth fields. The CPCS offers programs in:

CPCS noncredit workshops and certificates are for anyone who is thinking of changing careers, as well as those who want to advance their current career, need to keep current with the latest updates in their field or just want to learn a new skill.
“Employers still like college degrees but are looking for specific skills sets relevant to their company or industry,” McGowan said.
