Alice Hoffman ’73

Alice Hoffman grew up on Long Island and earned a BA in English at Adelphi University and a MA in Creative Writing from Stanford. Her first novel, Property Of, was written at the age of 21.

Since that remarkable beginning, Hoffman has become one of our nation’s most distinguished novelists. Her work has been published in more than 20 translations and more than 100 foreign editions. Her novels have received mention as notable books of the year by The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times and Library Journal.

Hoffman has remained connected with her alma mater. She founded the Alice Hoffman Young Writers Retreat, donated her literary collection to University Archives, returns to our Long Island campus as a guest speaker, is a supporter of the Adelphi NY Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program and was Adelphi’s honorary doctoral degree recipient at Commencement in 2002.

In her imagination and her life, Alice Hoffman '73, '02 (Hon.), has traveled far, but the best-selling author—and 2018 Adelphi Legend—has remained a devoted friend and fan of her alma mater.
