The Adelphi University Staff Council, established in Fall 2021, is an elected body of non-union staff members dedicated to representing the collective interests of their peers.

We serve as a bridge between staff and University leadership—creating opportunities for communication, advocacy, and community-building—while ensuring that staff perspectives are included in University decision-making.

About Staff Council

Who We Are

  • Sponsored by Human Resources in partnership with the Office of Community Concerns and Resolution.
  • Comprised of non-union staff members—representing all departments, work modalities (in-person and remote), and branch locations.
  • Nine elected members who serve as representatives of their peers across campus.
  • Each member serves a two-year term, from September 1 through August 31.

We are not a bargaining unit, a union substitute, or a replacement for Human Resources. We also do not serve as an alternative to the University’s official conflict resolution processes or as an extension of the Office of Community Concerns and Resolution.

Our Purpose and Scope

The Staff Council strives to foster a supportive workplace where non-union staff are valued, heard, and empowered to contribute to Adelphi University’s success.

  1. Representation: Represent the interests of non-union staff to University administration and Executive Leadership. Advocate on behalf of staff, share updates on key decisions, and elevate staff voices on committees and task forces.
  2. Feedback: Provide a safe and constructive channel for input. Gather feedback, make informed recommendations, and direct concerns to the appropriate offices.
  3. Respect and Growth: Foster an environment where every voice is valued, while encouraging opportunities for growth and connection.
  4. Community Building: Strengthen community and collaboration across departments, campuses, and work modalities.

How to Join Staff Council

Each year, non-union staff have the opportunity to shape the Staff Council through annual elections, run by Human Resources in partnership with the Office of Community Concerns and Resolution. Staff can nominate a colleague or submit a self-nomination.

Elected members represent their peers across campus and serve a two-year term from September 1 through August 31.

Initiatives 2025–2026

We are actively working on initiatives that strengthen communication, support staff well-being, and ensure all voices are heard.

  • Staff Council Website: Updated to enhance visibility, accessibility and connection.
  • Messaging: Strengthen communication and outreach across all staff groups.
  • Listen to Our Peers: Gather input from departments and areas to ensure staff voices are represented.
  • Engage All Staff: Connect with employees working in-person, remotely, and at branch locations.
  • Partner to Provide Opportunities: Participate together in programs and activities during the workday.
  • Support Campus Engagement: Encourage participation in University events and initiatives.
  • Engagement with Executive Leadership: Host opportunities and events to connect colleagues with Council members and leadership.
  • Do It Together: Participate in campus wellness initiatives such as yoga, mindfulness, and more.
  • Walk with Staff Council: Continue weekly Thursday walks (rain or shine) to promote wellness and connection.
  • Ride Sharing Opportunities: Explore sustainable and convenient commuting options for staff.
  • New Staff Mentorship: Support new staff as they transition into their roles.
  • Adelphi’s Annual Employee Expo: Participate in a campus-wide event celebrating staff engagement and contributions.
  • Community Service: Partner with campus and community stakeholders for meaningful volunteer initiatives.
  • Relay for Life: Join together to raise funds and awareness for a cause that unites the campus community.

2024–2025 Academic Year Highlights

  • Distributed a Campus Interest Survey to gather staff input and guide future initiatives.
  • Hosted a Meet-and-Greet to connect with colleagues and share how the council can provide support.
  • Represented the council at Adelphi’s Annual Employee Expo.
  • Launched Walk with Staff Council, a weekly Thursday wellness and community engagement initiative.
  • Supported campus improvements, including installation of new vending machines.
  • Advocated for the continuation of the Compressed Summer Workweek program.
  • Participated in the planning of Take Your Child to Work Day.
  • Raised funds for Relay for Life.
  • Coordinated a Food and Toiletry Drive to support the Panther Pantry.
  • Partnered with New York Edge to host a School Supply Drive, benefiting local students.
