The Last Walk

Although the annual LI2Day Walk to Fight Breast Cancer, like most group events these days, was cancelled, that didn’t stop the Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline team from doing their bit to support the hotline. Some of the walk team members gathered in Eisenhower Park—wearing masks and 6 feet apart—to raise money for the program. Team leader Susan Shulman from Westbury described the experience as “bittersweet” as team members walked close to home and in small groups. She says, “There were no rest stops, nobody to cheer us on, and we walked with the knowledge that this was the last LI2DAY Walk. Up until COVID-19 nothing could stop us – rain, bone melting heat, more rain, unseasonable cold, lightning, thunder, more rain, the threat of a tornado…and did I mention rain? “

LI2Day began 17 years ago and raised $7million that was distributed to grassroots. community-based breast cancer organizations on Long Island. The Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program has received $464,700. Says Ginny Salerno, the founder and director of LI2Day, “I have personally enjoyed working with everyone at Adelphi and have been amazed at the wonderful work the organization does not only with the hotline but with the many community programs made available to everyone even diverse communities generally marginalized by society.”
