Dear Adelphi community:

I’d like to thank the students, faculty and staff who came to our University Forum last Monday, November 5, to hear updates and ask questions about the Ruth S. Harley University Center project.

Our moderator, Provost and Executive Vice President Steve Everett, D.M.A., opened the event by reminding everyone to go vote on Election Day, Tuesday, November 6. Our country saw record voter turnout, and Dr. Everett, the panel and I were happy to see this same spirit of engagement and participation at the forum—especially from our students—regarding a building that’s such an important part of our campus.

First, a quick update on what was shared. After opening statements from Jillian Hershman, president of the Student Government Association, and Graduate Student Council President Natalie Madray, our panelists shared a presentation you can view here.

Jeffrey Kessler, assistant vice president and dean of student affairs, addressed how much thought and consideration were put into office relocations and shared how we hope to make the move as easy as possible.

Joseph Battaglia, director of budget, planning and telecommunications, Office of Information Technology, assured us we’ll be keeping everyone well fed with more food options around campus.

Alain Lanz, director of auxiliary and event services, let us know that the fundraising tables and the commuter information table will temporarily move to the Nexus Building. So far, he said, 331 events have already been accommodated for the spring semester. Evening meetings for student organizations have been relocated, and he is working on finding space for daytime meetings as well.

Robert Shipley, assistant vice president for facilities management, explained that we will be using energy-efficient glass, LED lights, and many reclaimed and recycled construction materials. Dining Services will be reducing food and plastic waste and offering more organic and locally grown food. We will have more information on sustainability next week.

Second, an update on your live and online questions. Our teams—Facilities Management, Dining Services and Executive Leadership—are working now on answering the many questions you submitted online—well over 100 so far. Next week, I will be able to share many answers; thank you in advance for your patience as we do the research required.

Since the forum is over, we have closed the Mentimeter site, but you can still submit your questions at ucprogress.adelphi.edu. I look forward to working together with you on this exciting project for all in our community!
