To the Members of the Adelphi Community,

Our region has taken a terrible blow and the impact of the storm continues to take its toll as families return to their homes to survey the damage and begin the very difficult process of rebuilding their lives. This will take weeks, if not months. I want to thank our students, staff, and faculty who gave hundreds of hours of service on campus and at emergency shelters and through regional, grassroots efforts in their communities. The blood and relief drives on campus were a tremendous success. Read more and see the photos here. Adelphi describes itself as the engaged university— a message brought to life by the acts of selfless kindness and compassion demonstrated in response to this disaster.

I invite you to join the senior staff and me on November 9, 2012, 10:30 a.m., in the Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom in the Ruth S. Harley University Center as we come together to discuss the effects of Hurricane Sandy and the numerous University initiatives to respond to this disaster.

In that spirit, we are announcing a relief effort to support our staff and faculty who either lost their primary residences or are facing long term displacement. Beginning today, we will start a monetary collection to offer grants to employees facing these circumstances. Adelphi University will match dollar for dollar any money raised now through November 16. All gifts, of any size, will go to a special restricted University account.

I have asked University Advancement to coordinate the collection of the gifts and Human Resources to coordinate a team of Human Resource staff and union representatives to determine the guidelines and process of distributing the dollars raised. While your gifts to the University will be tax deductible, not a single dollar raised will be kept by Adelphi. Gifts can be dropped off in University Advancement in Levermore 204 (from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.), in the University Center Lobby starting tomorrow, November 6 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., or online at https://www.adelphi.edu/sandygrantfund.

Again, while we know many have lost a great deal in the storm, our goal with this effort is to assist those who lost their primary residences or are facing long term displacement from their homes. We intend to distribute the money by Monday, November 19, prior to the Thanksgiving holiday for those who are eligible.

I know you will be as generous as possible and thank you in advance for all you do for the Adelphi community. Grant eligibility details will be forthcoming from Human Resources tomorrow. I look forward to seeing you on Friday.

Sincerely,

Dr. Robert A. Scott
President
