Playful Poses for Young Yogis
In his book, Active Start for Healthy Kids (Human Kinetics, 2006), Adelphi Professor Stephen Virgilio, who teaches in the Ruth S. Ammon School of Education’s Department of Exercise Science, Health Studies, Physical Education & Sport Management, offers detailed information for parents and educators on introducing yoga to children. In the chapter, “Yoga for Kids,” Dr. Virgilio includes photographs and straightforward explanations of various gentle, kid-friendly poses, including hero, bird, camel, squirrel, star, and ostrich. In an appendix, he also illustrates potentially harmful poses to skip, including the back bend, swan, and plow, which place undue stress on the back.
