Individually and collectively, we are committed to upholding the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion at Adelphi, beginning with the approval of the Momentum strategic plan in 2015 and, specifically, Goal Three—to be a model of diversity and inclusion.

Dear Members of the Adelphi Community,

On behalf of the Adelphi University Board of Trustees, we recognize and thank you for being a tireless and caring force for social justice.

The history of racism in our country is real, and, as trustees, we must acknowledge the historically white culture of our University in order to drive transformational change and eliminate systemic racism in our community.

Twenty-three people currently sit on our board. Twenty are alumni who once walked Adelphi’s paths and hallways. Yet, for all of us, your frustration, grief, anger and passion are palpable and personal.

We and our fellow board members unequivocally denounce racism and all acts of hatred, bias, bigotry and violence.

Individually and collectively, we are committed to upholding the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion at Adelphi, beginning with the approval of the Momentum strategic plan in 2015 and, specifically, Goal Three—to be a model of diversity and inclusion. That said, we hear you—there is a lot more work to do. Our Adelphi community’s urgent call for specific, measurable action is clear, and we fully support heightened attention and efforts to dismantle racism, bias and inequity in all the ways that we operate, work, learn and teach.

As a board, we endorse the leadership’s intensified efforts to ensure this, including the four pillars shared by President Riordan and executive leadership in their June 24 message. We are committed to working together to bring about a positive transformation at Adelphi that addresses any and all racial inequities that disproportionately harm our community members.

On behalf of the Adelphi Board of Trustees, we thank you in advance for bringing your energy, passion, commitment and ideas to this crucial task.

Sincerely,

Ronald B. Lee, BA ’67, Chair, Adelphi University Board of Trustees
Susan Murphy, PhD, Vice-Chair, Adelphi University Board of Trustees
Marc S. Strachan, BBA ’81, Vice-Chair, Adelphi University Board of Trustees
Lois C. Schlissel, JD, Secretary, Adelphi University Board of Trustees
