Panel discusses implementation of the Affordable Care Act
On January 29, the Center for Health Innovation presented a roundtable on the state of healthcare featuring several key leaders in the field. The discussion focused on the impact of President Barack Obama’s second term as well as the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, and provided a situational snapshot of where we are today, and where we may go in the future.
Speaker Profiles
Dr. Linda Brady
Dr. Linda Brady has been President and CEO of Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, since 1999, and has been associated with the hospital for 30 years. Dr. Brady previously served as the Associate Medical Director of Psychiatric Emergency Service at Kings County Hospital, and Medical Director and Director of Psychiatry and Neurology at Kingsbrook. A cum laude graduate of Barnard College, Dr. Brady received her medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and completed her psychiatric residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx Municipal Hospital Center.
Dr. Brady is a Board Certified Psychiatrist and is an Assistant Clinical professor in the Department of Psychiatry at SUNY Health Sciences Center of Brooklyn. Dr. Brady is a member of the NYS Board for Professional Medical Conduct, the Board of Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA) and the Board of the Hospital Association of New York State (HANYS).
Ms. Kathleen Shure
Ms. Kathleen Shure is a Senior Vice President with the Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA). She is responsible for all managed care and insurance activities and has lead responsibility for health reform policy matters involving Medicaid and coverage expansion. Prior to joining GNYHA in 2008, Ms. Shure was director of the Office of Managed Care in the New York State Department of Health where she was responsible for regulatory oversight of the managed care industry in the State; implementation of all Medicaid managed care programs and was the Department’s lead on federal waiver and universal coverage initiatives. Prior to joining the Health Department, Ms. Shure worked with the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System running their management services organization and with HIP Health Plan where her last position was Senior Vice President in charge of provider relations and government programs. Ms. Shure began her career with the Health Care Financing Administration working in Medicaid reimbursement. She has a BA in economics from Colgate University and an MPA in health policy and administration from NYU.
Theodore B. Smith, III
Theodore B. Smith, III, 49, currently serves as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of John Hassall, Inc., a privately held manufacturer of specialty aerospace and automotive fasteners, located in Westbury, New York. Mr. Smith is a Managing Partner of Canrock Ventures, an early stage technology venture capital fund that was founded in 2010 and focuses on turning good technology ideas into great technology businesses. Mr. Smith is a Board Member of Global Telecom & Technology, Inc. (GTT), a leading global multi-network operator that provides vendor-neutral, best-of-breed, network solutions for enterprise and service providers. Mr. Smith is also a Board Member of General Sentiment, a technology company specializing in research and analytics, and Board Member of Karma411, a web 2.0 “people-to-people” online fundraising platform.
Additionally, Mr. Smith is a Board Member of Soneter, an innovative, non-invasive metering technology that provides detailed consumption analysis, history and hazard prevention through software as a service (SaaS) with integrated billing solutions. Mr. Smith holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in Economics and Art from Colgate University.
Dr. Steven Walerstein
Dr. Steven Walerstein is responsible for the oversight of the provision of medical care throughout the Nassau Health Care Corporation in his role as Medical Director. He further works collaboratively with the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education in assuring the highest quality training programs for medical students and residents. Prior to being appointed Medical Director, Dr. Walerstein served as Vice President for Medical Affairs and Associate Medical Director for New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, New York from August of 2002 through July of 2005. Dr. Walerstein served as Chairman and Program Director for the Department of Medicine at Nassau University Medical Center from September 1999 until March 2002.
Dr. Walerstein graduated in 1979 from the Six Year Bio-Medical Program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Albany Medical College with a Bachelor of Science, Magna Cum Laude, and a Doctor of Medicine. He went on to complete his postgraduate training in the Primary Care Internal Medicine Program at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC.
