Adelphi University has received a $75,000 Ford Foundation grant to enhance its international programs with the goal of expanding students’ understanding of global issues. Adelphi sought and won the prestigious grant—its first from the Ford Foundation in more than 50 years.

In awarding the grant, the Ford Foundation cited Adelphi’s commitment to broadening students’ knowledge of crucial global issues through events and curricular programs. Adelphi will establish a faculty-led committee to assess current offerings and advise on improvements and new initiatives. The funds will be used for recommended faculty development, including inviting consultants and other experts to campus.

In 2003 the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations of the Department of Public Information (DPI) of the United Nations approved Adelphi as a non-governmental organization (NGO), in recognition of the University’s commitment to bringing “global awareness of international issues and the United Nations to the university community and the public.” Adelphi regularly invites U.N. ambassadors to speak on campus, and has held programs with the World Health Organization. In 2006, Adelphi launched its Levermore Global Scholars program, an interdisciplinary program that offers students opportunities for community involvement and global learning.
