Dear Adelphi Family,

Over the past few days, the tragic death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, on the heels of other painful tragedies, has reminded us of the racism and prejudice that continues to exist in our society. It is troubling and angering to witness these recurrent incidents of violence against Black people in our communities. We personally share in the grief and outrage that weighs heavily on many members of our Adelphi family.

Adelphi is a community of students, scholars and colleagues who hope, plan and work to improve the world around us–for today, and for the generations to come. It is our obligation to speak out against hatred, bias and violence that counteract our best intentions, and to model inclusivity and acceptance.

As a remarkable and positive community of enlightened individuals, we are unequivocally committed to diversity, equity and inclusion. We believe that every person is worthy of dignity, care, respect, compassion and opportunity. We know that no one should be judged, helped or hurt because of their skin color, gender identity, ethnicity, religion, ability or sexuality. Individuality is valued and celebrated at Adelphi.

There is still much work to do. And, this fact comes into much sharper focus when acts of racism, injustice and violence bring our country to such odds. I hope you will all share your generously compassionate spirits in the coming days as our country works through another difficult lesson toward greater enlightenment and fairness. Each of us at Adelphi–unique as we are–adds knowledge, creativity and perspective.

Maya Angelou said it best: “Hate, it has caused a lot of problems in this world, but it has not solved one yet.”

Tomorrow, you will receive an invitation to join in a facilitated conversation this week about events that are occurring around the country. We hope you will join in sharing your perspective.

All the best,

Christine M. Riordan, PhD
President
