Adelphi University deeply mourns the passing of alumnus and Trustee Emeritus John J. Gutleber ’68, M.B.A. ’70. A generous supporter of the University, he served on the Adelphi University Board of Trustees for 12 years, including terms on the Executive Committee and as board secretary before earning emeritus status in 2014. He was a leader on the board, over the years chairing the trustee committees on buildings and grounds, finance and administration, investment, and trustee affairs.
A native Long Islander, Mr. Gutleber had an exceptional career in banking and real estate, including his most recent role as president and chief executive officer of Manhasset, New York-based Castagna Realty Co., Inc. He was also actively involved in his community, including as a board member of the Long Island Association, Inc., and of The Viscardi Center, in Albertson, New York, a network of nonprofits that employ and educate individuals with disabilities.
Before joining the Adelphi University Board of Trustees, Mr. Gutleber was honored as Outstanding Alumnus at Adelphi’s first President’s Gala in 2001. A member of Chi Sigma fraternity, he supported University priorities including the Adelphi Fund, the Campaign for Adelphi, the Golf Classic, the Chi Sigma Fund and student scholarships. He also established a permanent legacy at the University as a member of the Ruth S. Harley Society for planned giving through the establishment of the endowed Gutleber Family Scholarship.
Adelphi extends its deepest sympathy to the members of Mr. Gutleber’s family, including his wife, Fran, and daughters, Stephanie Gutleber, Jaclyn Gutleber, M.S.W. ’05, and Megan Silva, stepdaughter Lauren Brunwasser, and stepson Cory Brunwasser.
