Grant to help underserved Nassau County women who have breast cancer

For the third year in a row, the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program has received a grant from Kat’s Ribbon of Hope. The $50,229 donated this year will be used to provide psychosocial support, counseling services and patient navigation to under-served minority women diagnosed with breast cancer in Nassau County. The total amount contributed to date from Kat’s Ribbon is $138,343.

“Kat’s Ribbon miraculously intervened when we lost our funding for this project three years ago,” says Hillary Rutter, the director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program. “They have enabled us to help pay the salary for the bilingual social worker and this year to increase her hours so that we can reach more women in need.”

Kat’s Ribbon of Hope, based on Long Island, provides financial support to charitable organizations conducting breast cancer research and raises awareness for early detection of breast cancer. They offer financial assistance to individuals who would otherwise not be able to afford early detection and treatment services. Their intention is to help save lives by making critical information and services accessible to women in their fight against breast cancer.

“It is an honor to support and work with the Adelphi Women’s BC hotline program,” says KROH founder Katerina Dinas Raptis, who is a breast cancer survivor. “Through our partnership with Adelphi, KROH supports a patient navigator who works very closely with patients and assures that their treatment is not interrupted by challenges such as fear of deportation, inability to pay for treatment, prostheses, wigs, lymphedema supplies, medication, transportation, child-care, and living expenses.  I am proud that we are creating awareness and helping women and men right here in our own backyard.”

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, established in 1980, is the oldest breast cancer hotline in the country, providing information and emotional support to anyone concerned about breast cancer. The hotline number is 800-877-8077. You are not alone.
