Winners of the 2015-2016 Study Abroad Photo Contest

Winners of the 2015-2016 Photo Contest

Congratulations to the most recent winners of the Center for International Education’s annual Photo Contest!  Held on November 14, 2016, as the opening event of International Education Week, the contest reception had a total of 45 entries from 15 students.  The categories included Global Landscape and Global People and Culture. After judges President Riordan, Professor Devin Thornburg, and Assistant Director of International Services, Rachel Nelson determined which photos captured a landscape or a global people/culture the best, they were put on display for all in attendance.

There were two first place winners for Landscape photographs. Jamie Ahrens, a Junior communications major, won for her Gibson Steps photo that she shot in Australia while away for the semester at the University of the Sunshine Coast.  Sophomore Nursing major, Megan Velsor took the other winning photo of the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland while on her semester abroad at Kingston University.  The People and Culture photograph winner was that of a tobacco man in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, shot by Senior English major in the STEP program Jacqueline Castelli on the Adelphi faculty-led Education and Community Service Trip to Cuba.

In addition to the announcement of the winners, the Photo Contest Reception allowed everyone to vote for one winner of the People’s Choice Award for best photograph at the reception. The award went to Brittany John for her night time street scene in Cuba, which she captured on the same trip as Castelli.

All winners received a $50 gift card to Barnes & Noble and all of the finalists were able to take home their enlarged photos as a great memento of their abroad experience.  The Center for International Education thanks everyone who submitted photographs to the contest!  We truly enjoy hearing about your experiences and seeing just a glimpse of them through your perspective.  When you return with stories and photos, you are educating the entire Adelphi community about the importance of international education and how vast the world truly is.

Jamie Ahrens (Australia) — Global Landscape Category (TIED for 1st Place)

Jacqueline Castelli (CUBA) — People and Culture Category

Brittany John (Cuba) — People’s Choice Award
