Understanding and Working With The Invisible Toll of Race In Couples
The topic of race can have a subtle, almost invisible presence in a couple’s relationship.
The issue of race is very much in the therapy room, even when it goes unspoken. It quietly affects communication, conflicts, connection, and emotional safety that a couple experiences. As clinicians we can help the couple recognize when ruptures, defensiveness, and misunderstandings are rooted in their partner’s racial identity, lived experiences, and systemic stressors. Through case vignettes, education, and discussion, clinicians will recognize the role and toll of race in and on a couple; how to engage couples in conversations about race without creating rupture; and how to navigate their own biases and countertransference when working with racially diverse couples.
This workshop is part of the Program in Couple Therapy Series.
