Developing Intimacy in Couples: What’s A Therapist To Do?

We will discuss various definitions of intimacy, and outline various levels of connectedness that a couple can work towards. In addition, we will discuss various suggestions for therapist intervention that can enable each individual in the couple, and the couple itself, to be comfortable with the deepening of intimacy. We shall also consider aspects of therapist comfort with emotional connectedness, which can affect the level of discussion during the therapy session.

Learning Objectives

1. Understanding the difference between attachment and involvement, and its relevance to levels of intimacy
2. Understanding the role of playful capacity in the development of intimacy
3. Recognizing shame as a defense against intimacy
4. Understanding the quality of empathy by each partner, for each partner, for the development of intimacy
5. Recognizing the role of each person’s self-image in either fostering or inhibiting intimacy
6. Exploring the importance of allowing due diligence in the relationship as a propaedeutic for evolution towards intimacy
7. Dream sharing as a technique to abet the development of intimacy
