A Primer in the Use of Self in Social Work Practice

In the face of multiple crises and the unknowns of the future, it is important to understand how as social workers, we see ourselves, both professionally and personally.

While we are tasked with healing our communities, we are also tasked with carrying the weight of our own experiences, both past and present, through this time, which inevitably impacts our work.

We invite you to join us in this highly interactive workshop intended to offer you opportunities to face yourselves and consider how resiliency, acknowledging grief & loss, and diversity, equity and inclusion are paths towards authenticity and strength for our social work leadership and practice.

Faculty

Dr. Laura Quiros, PhD., LMSW

Dr. Laura Quiros, PhD., LMSW is an Associate Professor of Social Work at Adelphi University for the past ten years. She teaches social work practice at the Doctoral and Masters level. Her research and scholarly interests focus on the social construction of racial and ethnic identity and trauma-informed care from a social justice lens. The common thread in her consulting, teaching and scholarship is elevating complexity and compassion and furthering the mission of social justice, including diversity and inclusion.

She works to find spaces to advance inclusion within the academy, corporate and non-profit sectors and help connect leadership to missions and agendas of trauma-informed practice from diversity, equity and inclusion lens. Her work is accomplished through relationship building. She uses her relationship-building skills as a way to foster inclusion by helping to increase awareness and move towards action.

Her practice is one of liberation, love and generosity. Her work can help deepen the conversation by supporting and nurturing leaders to develop a reflective consciousness that is strength-based, critically nurturing and ultimately transformational.

New York State Office of the Professions (NYSED) regulations require that participants must be present for the entire approved educational activity in order to receive a certificate for continuing education hours. There is no accommodation in the State regulations for late arrival, late return from lunch or breaks, or early departure. According to NYSED, in order to award social work CEs; “When you offer a multi-day or multi-part course/educational activity, the learner must complete all parts in order to earn the certificate for contact hours, in the same way that a student must complete a semester-long course to receive college credit. You may not award partial credit for a program, even a one-day program, if the learner does not complete all requirements at that time.

Cancellation Policy

Unfortunately, we cannot provide refunds for cancellations made seven working days or fewer before the event for any reason—or for no-shows. We can provide credit towards a future workshop up to 24 hours before the event. After that, no credit will be issued.
