Couples and Poly and Kink, Oh My! Dorothy, We’re Definitely Not In Kansas Anymore
While relationship structures and preferences such as polyamory and kink seem to challenge more traditional societal norms, they actually tend to lead with pillars of high-level communication, intentionality, safety, and trust – components that many monogamous relationships struggle with, in public or in private.
In addition, while non-traditional relationship structures such as polyamory and other forms of ethical nonmonogamy (ENM) certainly don’t go without their challenges, they actually feel more authentic and enjoyable to many people, when they allow themselves to learn, think, and feel about it. This thought-provoking and interactive workshop provides a reminder that exposure to different relational models can function as a mirror or a prism, facilitating self-discovery and growth. It is for anyone who would like to expand their knowledge and deepen their learning about crucial aspects of love, the self, and relationships- no matter how they identify in terms of relationship orientation (polyamorous, monogamous, etc).
Course Objectives
- To be able to differentiate between and develop clinical competence in diverse relationship structures, for example, consensual non-monogamy (including polyamory) and kink relationship dynamics, in a non-pathologizing framework
- Discuss consent, boundary-setting, and repair strategies drawn from monogamous, polyamorous, and kink communities, integrating these tools into couples and relational therapy interventions
- Evaluate how attachment patterns, jealousy, compersion, power exchange, and relational agreements function across different structures, and implement evidence-informed interventions (including relationship agreements) that support informed choice, ethical responsibility, emotional regulation, safety, and mutual care and accountability
- To learn more about yourself and your own relationship strengths, vulnerabilities, and preferences
This workshop is part of the Program in Couple Therapy Series.
