Michael J. SorrellKeynote Speaker: Michael J. Sorrell, Ed.D.

Ranked with the likes of Tim Cook and Bill and Melinda Gates on Fortune’s 2018 list of the world’s greatest leaders, Michael Sorrell transformed struggling Paul Quinn College in Dallas into one of the most innovative colleges in America. An attorney and former White House staffer, Sorrell brought a bold new vision to Paul Quinn, focusing on academic rigor, experiential learning and entrepreneurship. He also pioneered what he named the “urban work college model,” based on Paul Quinn’s dramatic success. Inspiring, straight-talking, and with a compelling and hopeful story to tell, Sorrell received a standing ovation at SXSW Education for his dynamic delivery and groundbreaking approaches to reinventing the future of American higher education.

When Sorrell took the helm of Paul Quinn in 2007, enrollment had been declining for more than five years and the college was on the verge of being shut down. Today, it is considered a shining model of urban education and in most years, has a waiting list. As Fortune noted when naming him to their top 50, “Sorrell quickly set about challenging perceptions, both external and internal, by giving Paul Quinn a bigger vision of itself.” With a rallying cry of “WE Over Me,” and a mission to end poverty, Sorrell led both a movement and a total transformation. He bolstered admissions standards, stepped up recruitment, demolished abandoned campus buildings, and in partnership with PepsiCo, turned the football field into an organic farm that feeds the neighborhood and the Dallas Cowboys. The college was honored as HBCU of the Year, the HBCU Student Government Association of the Year and the HBCU Business Program of the Year and was named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. It also became one of only a handful of federally recognized work colleges, a key component of the school’s reality-based educational approach.

Sorrell has received numerous awards and recognition for his civic and educational leadership. He is the only three-time recipient of the HBCU Male President of the Year Award and was named one of America’s 10 Most Innovative College Presidents. He also received Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. and PUSH/Excel’s Education Leadership Award, the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education and the A. Kenneth Pye Award for Excellence in Education from Duke University’s School of Law. Sorrell received a B.A. from Oberlin, a J.D. and M.A. in Public Policy from Duke University and an Ed.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He was the recipient of a Sloan Foundation Graduate Fellowship, studying as a graduate fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School and Duke. Before taking leadership of Paul Quinn, Sorrell enjoyed a successful career representing professional basketball players, as a public affairs consultant, as an attorney, and as a special assistant in the White House under Bill Clinton.

A talented and energizing presenter, Sorrell has inspired crowds at TEDx, SXSW EDU, the Aspen Institute, Duke University, and numerous other venues with his vision for education, uniting communities and leading through challenges. His memorable speeches often include his formula for success at Paul Quinn College: preach hope, practice patience, instill resilience, be entrepreneurial in thought and action, and most of all, lead with love.

Provost Everett will provide opening remarks for the conference. He will talk about equity, excellence and innovation in higher education. He will build off of the concept of “excellence” by speaking to familiar issues such as navigating difference, online and lifelong learning and how this relates to the future of higher education and what this means to Adelphi.

While much has been written about the so-called “Millennial generation,” this roundtable forum, sponsored by the General Education Committee, will be a welcome opportunity to discuss the specific challenges and opportunities Adelphi students face in the twenty-first century. Among other questions, we will consider the following: Who are the students that arrive at Adelphi as first-year undergraduates? What assumptions or expectations regarding the purpose of higher education do they bring with them to college? How does the increasing diversity of our students shape the experiences they have in our classrooms, labs, and studios? What unique value—and values—does an Adelphi education offer our students? Table conversations will include members of the General Education Committee as well as faculty who teach in the First-Year Seminar program.

The Mobile Summer Institutes (MoSIs) are an institution-based iteration of the nationally renowned Summer Institutes on Scientific Teaching that address challenges in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education reform unique to college and universities. The MoSI model is based on Charles Henderson’s four categories of change strategies to improve adoption of evidence-based teaching. In addition to the proven training paradigm provided by the pedagogy workshop, the Mobile Summer Institutes provide instruction in peer evaluation to drive long-term reflective teaching as well as facilitated strategic planning to leverage newly gained expertise toward educational reform.

Cognitive psychologists, neuroscientists, and biologists all have produced a revealing body of research over the past several decades on how human beings learn, but often translating these findings into the classroom is overwhelming for busy instructors. Small Teaching bridges the gap between research and practice by providing a fully developed strategy for making deliberate, structured, and incremental steps towards tuning into how your students are hardwired to learn.

11:00 a.m. – 11:50 a.m. Connecting the Dots: Improving Student Outcomes with Great Instructional Design

Can online education increase postsecondary access and success for the underserved students who need it most? Data shows historically online education “widens access but on average lowers students completion rates.” Whitney Kilgore and Krista Galyen of iDesign, Adelphi’s educational services partner, contend that creating an effective online environment through great course design will breach that gap, meet learners where they are, engage them in the content while supporting pathways to successful student outcomes. They will share a recent case study from Loma Linda University’s RN to BS program where great instructional design retained existing students, recruited new cohorts, and most importantly improved student outcomes.

The Gallup and Strada Education Network May 2018 report, “From College to Life: Relevance and the Value of Higher Education,” listed two key factors that influence perceptions of the value of higher ed among 110,481 employed people who had taken at least some college courses. Those two factors were a relationship-rich experience (i.e., mentoring) and whether it included work-integrated learning. A panel featuring keynote Michael Sorrell, Adelphi faculty, and key student services explore best practices and opportunities for high impact learning in undergraduate education.

Join our 2017 Inaugural Adelphi Teaching Fellows for a interactive session as they detail how they spent last year innovating with evidence based active learning strategies, discussing effective course development and teaching practice, exploring the scholarship of teaching and learning, as well as using peer observation and mentoring as a collaborative process.

Event Parking

The event will be taking place while school is in session, so parking can be difficult. Luckily, there is parking at the Garden City Pool with regular shuttles running from the parking area directly to the event.
