The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program hosted an online forum on 2.24.25 with Dr. Douglas Marks, Medical Oncologist from NYU Langone Perlmutter Cancer Center. Dr. Marks discussed coping with the side effects of breast cancer treatment. He is a leader in treating advanced and metastatic breast cancer, and spoke about working with your medical team during your treatment journey to gain comprehensive support. The program was moderated by Angela Papalia, LMSW, Assistant Director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program.

The Benefits of Integrative Medicine: The use of Acupuncture, Acupressure and Physical Therapy to help ease symptoms of Breast Cancer.

On March 8, 2024 the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program offered a free forum on the Benefits of Integrative Medicine.

Integrative medicine pairs regular medicine with complementary remedies like acupuncture, massage and supplements. The idea is to treat the whole person: your mind, body, and spirit. Speakers are Yingrong Zhu, MD, and Soyeon Jo, PT. Yingrong Zhu, MD, Oncologic Rehabilitation at NYU Langone Health, Rusk Rehabilitation, who discussed how acupuncture and acupressure can help relieve some of the symptoms of cancer and side effects of cancer treatment. Soyeon Jo, PT, DPT, licensed physical therapist at Northwell Health STARS Rehabilitation, discussed how physical therapy can help breast cancer patients with lymphedema as well as other symptoms.

Coping With The Holidays forum. Cara Livoti, LCSW, Social Worker at NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center discussed different ways to cope with stress during the holiday season.

Cara A. Livoti is a licensed clinical social worker from Long Island, NY and a 2009 graduate of Adelphi University with a master’s degree in Social Work. Cara has been a part of the NYU Langone Long Island care team since 2011 with extensive experience in supporting not only her patients, but their caregivers and loved ones as well. She began her work inpatient at NYU Langone Long Island with various patient populations throughout the hospital. In 2021 she made the move to working specifically with the breast cancer patient population at NYU Perlmutter Cancer Center Long Island. Cara is well-versed in the resources available through NYU PCC and the community for her breast cancer patients and takes great pride in providing comprehensive psychosocial care to those with which she works. She especially enjoys facilitating the Long Island PCC breast cancer support groups twice a month via zoom. In her spare time, Cara enjoys spending time with her family (especially her 5 month old daughter Marina), virtual reality boxing, and attending Broadway musicals.

No one is ever prepared to hear the words, “You have breast cancer.” A breast cancer diagnosis can shock and blindside individuals and couples alike. Even partners who are strongly committed to one another may face difficult moments when confronted with the extraordinary stress of breast cancer. Couples may be presented with changes in relationship roles, routines and responsibilities throughout a partner’s diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. Studies indicate that couples who cope best with breast cancer are able to address the illness as a team with a shared sense of purpose and responsibility.
