Tolerance in Crisis: Forgiveness, Otherness and the Challenges of Psychoanalysis
In this three-hour seminar, participants are invited to explore one of today’s most urgent questions: what does it mean to practice tolerance when faced with painful forms of otherness? Drawing on the edited book Tolerance: A Concept in Crisis and the paper “Tolerance and Forgiveness: Theoretical and Clinical Perspectives on Coping with Painful Otherness,” the seminar examines how tolerance is tested in both clinical settings and everyday life.
Through theoretical reflections and clinical vignettes, the discussion will address encounters with different forms of otherness—such as gender, identity, and the traumatic realities of war—and consider how psychoanalysis can help move beyond defensive closure toward creativity, forgiveness, and transformation. The seminar invites participants to engage with theory, clinical experience, and their own reflections in dialogue.
This seminar is apart of the Holding the Frame: Navigating Politics, Permeability, and Fear in Therapy series.
